Japanese Lifestyle 日本のライフスタイル

Japan is made up of over 6,800 Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The majority of the 126,000,000 people live in densely populated coastal cities due to the unhabitual mountainous terrain in the center of the islands.

The lifestyles of the Japanese people are geared towards tradition and keep their culture. With the crowded city streets and cramped living conditions, people seem to live harmoniously and do so with a calm demeanor. Although different, the Japanese share many similarities as most of us in the United States. People of Japan work hard. Most adult males put in an average of 60 plus hours a week working. When not working they enjoy singing Karaoke, Baseball, and other sports.

The daily life of the Japanese is very rule oriented and structured. The Japanese are also very law-abiding citizens. This might attribute to the cleanliness of the city. The streets of Japan are surprisingly clean and trash free, and all this with very few trash receptacles.

Education in Japan is very important. Children in japan have very little free time once they are out of grade school. A lot of middle school and high school students attend extra classes or “cram school” after regular school. These are typically from 5:00pm to 10:00pm and even have classes on Saturday and Sunday.  Even though the compulsory education ends at the end of middle school (9th grade) almost all students continue on to high school.
